A fundamental purpose of FirstThings.us is that it should develop as an education resource, especially for those whose personal circumstances are limited.  The message is Conservative, which is to say we are about truth as a singularity and not as a relative notion.  The American founding principles recognized moral equality and individual freedom as the foundation of equal opportunity, not a license for "equal" outcome. It is from this perspective that the Mountain Observer has spent thousands of hours identifying literature useful to understanding and learning about the world around us, past and present. Such knowledge is essential preparation for the future, for each of us individually, and as a nation. Your grandchildren, if not you, will inherit the unfolding mess. 

Much knowledge is gained from personal experience; I recommend it.  However, personal experience has its limits.  It is foolish, and dangerous, simply to repeat yesterday's errors.  To take most matters seriously, it is essential to understand the past, not by rumor and innuendo, but by actual knowledge.  A true education involves developing knowledge of how to think, that is not only how to identify and process isolated facts and data, but also to test the facts and data, and then to assemble this material into comprehensive and meaningful relationships from which useful conclusions can be drawn, and further tested. 

Books, and other scripts, carefully screened for intellectual usefulness, over the ages are a major resource of accumulated wisdom and experience.  Many are currently available, and through diligent screening are made available under Amazon Books.  However, many important and useful titles remain only marginally available, or generally unavailable.  Such material will be accumulated here on this, or attached, pages.
