Pope Benedict XVI has directed the reintroduction
of the traditional rite. God bless Pope Benedict XVI. I would
predict
that eventually it will be recognized that this development saved the
Church of
Rome, and perhaps the whole of western culture. I have no
doubt
that the hand of the Holy Spirit was on the tiller. These
changes reorder the Church as the primordial framework of
western civilization, including a more correct perspective on the
critical
contributions of the Greek philosophers coupled with Roman law.
It
re-elevates a complex history beyond the scope of what we are about
here.
Just in summary, what we now have is the necessary foundation for the
re-balancing of contemporary western culture, including
education.

Mr. President, the options regarding Iran: 1)
You
can wait for
reformers to overthrow the current regime. The
information available to me indicates that this cannot happen
before nuclear weapons capability has been achieved for a lengthy
list of
reasons. The
real problem with this idea is that even if the reformers were
successful, their opposition (defenders of the current regime) would
still be
powerful, with attendant political instability going
forward. What
guarantee is there that such a political stew, however configured,
would
actually choose to accommodate us with a credible change of direction
on Iran's
nuclear program and ambitions? At the very least, we would be
confronted
with a new, and additional, Pakistani dilemma. 2).
You can continue to wait for others, through
various proposed schemes of economic coercion to "force" a change in
Iranian attitude on the issue, which completely underestimates and
misunderstands the Iranian attitude on the issue. Continuing to
wait for
a miracle to happen is wasting time while allowing the situation to
continue to
deteriorate. There is the further unsatisfactory consequence of
allowing
others to operate our own foreign policy and oversee our own national
security
interests. I would remind you that similar dithering in late 2002
and
early 2003 bought the time Saddam Hussein and his Russian pals needed
to
apparently squirrel away probable WMD and to prepare for the insurgency
that
began to unfold in April of 2003. You should have learned by now
that you
just can't play around with these people, or Democrats, a distinction
too frequently
without a difference. 3).
The hard fact of the matter is that the military option
is the only responsible option available to the United States, in
behalf of not
only our own security interests, but that of the rest of the world as
well. I know that the planning and preparedness are largely in
place. And I speak not of something tentative, but the full
bore
plan to knock out their entire military capability. You know of
which I
speak. Do it. Soon. And worry not about
your
critics; they are beyond being mollified, and you have already spent
too much
time and effort in that regard. Do this thing now, let the world
squeal,
and leave office in January of 2009 knowing that you, in fact, did the
right

The Fed cuts rates by half a point. While I
understand the reasoning (I think) behind this decision, my instincts
tell me
that it was a bad idea to make any cuts at all. I suspect that
the Fed
has not only stalled off on the inevitable day of reckoning, but even
worse,
thrown gasoline on the fire. There is a limit to the monetary
tricks that
can be tried to substitute for fiscal discipline, public or
private.
Common sense tells me that the locomotive left the rails some years
ago. Fiscal discipline is at the mercy of Congress and the
President, and is inherently political in nature. Therein lies
the

along: he is
a fraud. His famous ambiguity as Fed chairman was never anything
but a
cover-up for the fact that he never knew any more about what he said in

testimony than a lamp post, and for years the entire nation was
suckered by it
all. Perhaps we could call it Schwarzeneggeritus, which is to
say, the
hazards to your brain of marriage to a younger, good looking
LIBERAL. It

of the United States of America". Fred has been criticized by

who contend he has waited too long to announce. Actually, the
timing is
early by historical standards. I would wonder at the timing
of the
announcements of other candidates, Democrat and Republican; way, way
early. All this early activity reflects the depth of polarization
of
politics today in the United States. You will hear Fred speak
much of
"security, unity and prosperity" in the months ahead, as he addresses
a key concern about the threat to the United States occasioned by
international
IslamicFascism. He will also take on the difficult task of
directly
addressing the brick wall of entitlement spending towards which the
nation is
racing. His calculation is that the ordinary voter is better
prepared to
consider the problems of terrorism and big government entitlements than
the

Regarding Alberto Gonzales. So he
resigns, and I'm not so sure the timing was an accident. What we
have
here is a political incompetent; a fact widely recognized. What
we have
here is a victim of the Peter Principle, which says that there is a
tendency
for people to rise in an organization to their own level of
incompetency, set
up by a President who has repeatedly demonstrated his inclination to
promote
loyal friends over qualified candidates, e.g. Harriet Miers, et.
al. Unfortunately, in the matter of Alberto Gonzales, the matter
had
gotten out of hand, with Senator Upchuck Chucky Schumer and his fellow
Democrats frothing at the mouth about the forced departure of 8 U.S.
attorneys,
who by law simply serve at the President's pleasure. The issue of
the 8
attorneys has been politically fabricated out of whole cloth, and
everyone in
Washington DC, and a complicit Leftwing mainstream press, knows
it. The
real game is to find any way possible to dismantle the Bush
Administration, and
the focus on Gonzales has been to achieve his resignation so as to set
up an
approval of a replacement on condition of the appointment of a new
Special
Persecutor. The Democrat target is not Gonzales, or the reasons
for the
firing of the 8 attorneys; never has been. The real target is
Bush, his
Administration, the GOP, and any chance at all of a Republican
presidential win
in 2008. Anybody with a lick of political sense knows all this. Now
it so happens that the ultimate outcome of all this political
pushing and shoving remains to be determined. I would point out
that the
administration has options to undercut the Democrat strategy. 1).
Nominate a new Attorney General who is actually
qualified for the job; perhaps tough at this stage of the presidential
cycle
and given the hostile political climate that clearly threatens a
nominee's name
and career. 2.)
With or without a nominee, stall off until the end of
the year, and then make a recess appointment of a "care-taker" to get
to the end of the President's term. 3.)
Some combination of the above, all designed to not be
forced to swallow a Special Persecutor. With
some adroit political management of the situation, the entire
Democrat plan could come to be viewed by the voters as reaching too
far, and
the real source of the divisiveness that has paralyzed
Washington. And so

Yes, Larry Summers (Ex Treasury
Secretary under OJ Billyboy) you could be right. We may be
headed
for a recession. So it goes with the paper, and paperless, money
that
both political parties have mutually conspired to foist upon a
befuddled public
in all the decades since the 1930s. But perhaps not. The
economy we
sit upon is a colossus, and too many folks have a vested interest it
its
continued success. During such times it is inevitable that there
will be
those who think more as gaming speculators than investors. I see
what is
going on right now as ultimately healthy for the markets and the
broader
economy. Burn away the underbrush, quite possibly at the
"cost" of a general recession, or worse. The equation is too
huge for reliable predictions to be made at this point. However
things
work out we can be sure that some zero will stand up and say "I told
you
so", which will mean nothing more than the fact that a stopped clock is
right twice a day. Another thing is apparent to the Mountain
Observer.
Astute investors will make millions on the savvy purchase of a boat
load of
under-valued stocks. That is how a free market works, and
disciplines

There continues to be much angst in the land about
"global warming", alleged to be the official downside of climate
change. Forget about it; do as I do: burn as much coal as

cooling
cycle, which is too bad. I preferred the warming cycle, and I am
doing
the best I can to reverse the matter again with my new coal

Long time readers of the Mountain Observer will
recollect my skepticism about Ben Bernanke initially upon his
appointment to
the chairmanship of the Federal Reserve. Today I will state that
I am
impressed with his handling of the current credit and banking crisis
arising
from the boiling over of the super heated sub-prime mortgage and hedge
fund
markets. He is skillfully containing the problem within its
proper
dimensions and containing the pricing of the costs of correction to
those
responsible for the crap shoot; as it ought to be. The
market’s overall
will come to be much more healthy as a result. In the 1990"s the
crap shooters ran amok with technology stocks. This time the game
was
played with real estate. So far, at least, Bernanke seems
to showing
a lot more skill at diagnosing the problem, and containing it than Alan
Greenspan did back then. I was never really a Greenspan fan; let
us now
hope he just keeps his mouth shut for once, tough as that might be for
him to
do. Mr.
Bernanke just needs to continue focusing on relieving
the credit pressures on the affected segments of the banking industry,
at an
appropriate price to the malefactors, while at the same time not caving
into to
pressures from Main Street to lower rates that would fuel
inflation.
Ordinary consumers, trained for decades to rely on others (the
government and
regulated institutions) to guide their own choices, need to learn to
accept
some personal responsibility for their own borrowing and spending
decisions.
This cultural problem is really what is at the bottom of the
problem. People should buy houses only because they can afford
them, not
just because they want one. I know, it's a tough world out
there.

were dropped 08/09 against Marine Lance Cpl. Justin L. Sharratt
concerning an
"incident", aka firefight, in Haditha. Also cleared: Capt.
Randy W. Stone, battalion lawyer, accused of inadequately investigating
the
incident. Shame on state-side prosecutors for leveling these
charges in
the first place, all based on flimsy information from unreliable
sources and
premised on the intellectually perverted notion that actions by Marines
in
combat can be reasonably second guessed by attorneys and the media on
the
Potomac. Now
we await an apology from the Dishonorable Rep. John Murtha,
lower than a snake's belly, D-PA. He is a sorry and despicable
excuse of

There is a lot I could be saying that I am
not. I am getting tired of repeating the same old points.
The
fundamental political problem in this country today is that Americans,
a
majority it appears, are lost in a sea of denial concerning the
determination
and ability of an IslamicFascist enemy to destroy us, and how central
our
policies and decisions concerning Iraq are, and always have been, to
this
matter. At the heart of the matter is the Cartesian doctrine of
the
destruction of objective reality in favor of intellectual and moral
relativism. It is a long story, the exposure of which is central
to the
purpose of this website, however I confess to exploring a different
format. We shall see. Meanwhile, the "Surge" in Iraq
is succeeding, brilliantly. Again, General David Petraeus, carry

Is George W. Bush a Conservative? Hell
no, and Conservatives have known it for some time. He is what
this
political analyst calls center-right. The Left pejoratively calls
him a
cowboy; I wish, non-pejoratively, that it were true. He makes
great
speeches and then walks away from his own words. This has
happened
repeatedly throughout his term in office. The Mountain Observer
would
have always preferred Dick Cheney in the driver's seat, with a couple
of
advisors from Halliburton on the White House staff, and a spinal expert
over at
the Surgeon Generals' Office to administer to the American
people.

Is Fred Thompson a perfect
Conservative? Of course not, as such a creature does not
exist.
Furthermore, the supposition of such a question is that there is a
broad
consensus among Conservatives concerning what criteria would define the
"perfect Conservative" in the first place, which is in the category
of chasing butterflies. So it is that such a complaint concerning
Fred
Thompson is, shall we say, juvenile. We are living through a
period of
high political polarization in American history, not conducive to
reasoned
argument and discourse in the public, or private, square.
It is a
problem that afflicts both the Left and the Right, however I would dare
say
that today 90% of the problem is on the Left. Let's work to keep
it that
way. That is the opinion of the Mountain Observer, and his
further opinion,
as a Conservative, that today Fred Thompson, who is perhaps 85%
Conservative,
is the most ELECTABLE Conservative to be had. I would like to see
him

taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws,
and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments: For
suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves
invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever. He
has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his
protection and waging war against us. He
has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns,
and destroyed the lives of our people. He
is at this time transporting large armies of foreign
mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny,
already
begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in
the most
barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation. He
has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high
Seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of
their
friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands. He
has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has
endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless
Indian
savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction
of all
ages, sexes and conditions. In
every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress
in the most humble terms: Our repeated petitions have been answered
only by
repeated injury. A prince whose character is thus marked by every act
which may
define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people. Nor
have we been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We
have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to
extend
an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the
circumstances
of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native
justice
and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common
kindred to
disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our
connections
and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and

consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which
denounces
our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies
in war,
in peace friends. We,
therefore, the representatives of the united States of
America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge
of the
world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the
authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and
declare,
that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be free and
Independent
states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British
Crown, and
that all political connection between them and the state of Great
Britain, is
and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent
states,
they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances,
establish
commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states
may of
right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance

The President does something right, and puts the squash on jail time
for
"Scooter" Libby. As I reflect on it, the full pardon, at this
time, would have deprived Libby of the opportunity to fully clear his
name on
appeal. The pardon option remains available in the future if the
courts
on their own prove incapable of correcting for themselves this
outrageous
miscarriage of justice and subversion of both the legal system and the
political process by the Left. The fact of the matter is that I.

I have never been impressed with Michael Chertoff, currently Secretary
of
Homeland Security. How he ever got tangled up in the high levels
of this
administration remain a mystery to me. His general incompetency
first
came to my attention during the Katrina fiasco. I think in his
current
post as Secretary of Homeland Security he is a complete disaster.
Mr.
Secretary, you could get 750 miles of fence along the border
built in 6 months, if not sooner, if you awarded 150 contractors to
each build
5 miles of fence. This is not rocket science. During WWII
we built
and launched Liberty ships in 3 days, and I submit this is an equally
important
matter. Perhaps the real answer is that you have been under
orders to do
