07/28/08 On Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Mountain Observer Letter series is approaching its 8th anniversary, and from the very beginning I have tried to work the issue of fascist (socialist) economics in America. Arguably the citadel of this phenomena has been the twin towers of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Government creations faking as private enterprise, yet always implicitly on the umbilical cord of the taxpayers, these entities over the years have been swallowing up the American home mortgage market. No better example of government interference with free markets in this country exists. No finger pointing is possible; everyone is complicit. So it has come to pass that looking into the face of failures imagined to be disasters in waiting, Congress, the Administration, the Federal Reserve, Wall Street and everyone else with a hand in the pot, scream for a "bail out" by the tax payers. And it will happen, not the least because this is a political year. So the charade will continue longer, and the ultimate consequences will get worse. Ultimately, free market discipline will prevail, and true disaster will descend. Warn your grandchildren, as the fascist impulses will perhaps extend beyond the economics. The case could be made that political correctness is the precursor. JES

07/19/08 The politics of the energy crisis cannot be understood outside the context of the politics of manmade global warming, a political fraud, hoax and deception. Contrary to what AlGore would have you believe, ther is not general agreement within the scientific community on global warming, or climate change in general, as to what is currently going on, or why. To begin to understand some of this better, you might go to http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org. Perhaps I need to start a new page on the subject. JES

.

07/19/08  The energy crisis continues, not because it needs to, but because politicians who consider themselves the solution are, in fact, the problem. The privately held energy industry, including Halliburton, will solve the problem int the context of a free market economy, not grandstanding politicians spouting Marxist platitudes. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, get the hell out of the way. JES

.

07/19/08  Professor, and ex-Senator, Phil Graham was exactly correct in pointing out recently that we are a nation of whiners.  Which is exactly why it was a mistake to say so as an economic advisor to Senator John McCain in this political season.  The credit market correction continues, and government continues to try to bail everybody out.  Stunning to watch.  This is like trying to save a sinking ship by opening up the bilge cocks.  But again, it is the political season, and the American people are responsible for who is in office. Serious Considerations:

07/14/08 John McCain identifies Theodore Roosevelt as his Conservative role model, which says everything you need to know about John McCain. Teddy Roosevelt, good guy that he was in many respects, was not a Conservative, but rather a Progressive, and the leader of what became the movement within the GOP that we know today as Rockefeller (or coastal) Republicans. They hate genuine Conservatives, such as Reagan was, and the Bush family isn't. I doubt Teddy Roosevelt ever realized what he had launched into the future, or would approve of the direction his reformist initiatives have taken, and hijacked by Democrats. Teddy made clear his disapproval of the idea of hyphenated "Americans". McCain embraces La Raza (The Race), whose real agenda of Recondista is re-integration of the American southwest with Mexico. So it goes with John McCain, no Conservative he, in reality a Democrat in sheep's clothing. JES

07/12/08 Baraka Hussein OBAMA, the MESSIAH, presumptive Democrat Party Nominee for President of the United States, and the SAVIOR of the LEFT, decrees that you must see to it that every American child learns to speak Spanish. There; how about that, you racist Anglos! As for the Mountain Observer, perhaps I must make it clear that this website will never be publicized in Spanish, and no third party is authorized to do so. All people of peaceful and constructive intent are welcome to come to America, become Americans, which includes learning to speak English, and do so under American law. Join us as Americans, and you will be welcome. Otherwise, go home, or wherever. Americans are a free people; free to exercise their own individual discretion the option of what languages they may choose to learn, including Spanish. Baraka, Stuff it.JES

07/08/08 Voters might ask if the Democrats are incapable of organizing and running their own national convention, how will they run the country? So far, in Denver, they are making a real hash of it, and the circus is less than 2 months away. Over budget, if there is a budget, underfunded, directionless on security, and most likely short of port-a-potties. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, whose credentials as a bartender I would not question, at least up to this point has been in charge of it all, ably assisted in the background by Howard Dean, Chairman of the DNC, a certifiable horses ass. Your chance to watch the Democrat Mob in action, and ponder on the future under their direction. I predict that some finger pointing will ensue, and will watch in amusement from an additional mile higher. JES

07/04/08 The major outstanding issue in Iraq yet to be resolved is the political issue among themselves regarding the distribution of oil revenues. It is a complex question touching on the shape of Iraq itself, particularly the relationship of the Kurds with the central government. Meanwhile, progress is being made on rebuilding and developing the oil production superstructure as evidenced by apparently good cooperation between the Oil Ministry and western major producers, offering technical and legal support and advice. All parties involved recognize the need for success, and in fits and jerks the Iraqes themselves seem to be recognizing the value of a unified national formation. The stakes are high. JES

.

07/04/08 The fact of the matter is that we have essentially won the war in Iraq, thanks to the persistence of the President, General David Petraeus, and "the surge". However, most especially, thanks to the troops, overstretched yet the finest of us all. Thank you, soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen all. Real Americans love you for your service and a job well done, so far. We know that there is yet a long way to go in this current overall struggle with IslamicFascism, and that it must be won. Sadly, the real battle is among ourselves, here at home. JES

07/04/08 Congratulations are in order to Rush Limbaugh, who gets most of it right, most of the time, on his new contract. Today, on a national level, he is the only figment left of effective conservative commentary and leadership. Rush, they can't pay you too much. JES

Serious Considerations:

06/29/08 Patrick Buchanan has recently authored a book entitled Churchill, Hitler, and the unnecessary war: How Britain lost its Empire and the West Lost the World in which he asserts that Churchill, and other western leaders, were really responsible for World War II. I first became aware of Pat's line of thinking on this back in the early 1990's, and have never understood it at all; totally upside down with reality. The origins of this paleo conservative perspective go back at least to the 1930's, "America First" and Charles Lindberg, and were an extreme reaction to Wilsonian internationalist failure. For most, it only lasted through December 6th, 1941; for others the premise of Fortress America isolationism as a foundation of national security has continued to this day. Most Americans found themselves on a very steep learning curve on the morning of December 7th, 1941, as Jap Zeros came in on our fleet at Pearl Harbor. The paleo conservative political perspective continued, in various cultural corners, however slowly edged away by the gradual articulation of a more sober conservatism advanced by Bill Buckley and friends after the war. Lately, with the "War on Terrorism", and the decision to preemptively move on Iraq, the discussion has resurfaced in a more populist/libertarian fashion under Ron Paul in the GOP nomination process. So with the release of Pat's book, with, perhaps, the most articulate statement of the case likely to be made by anyone, it is necessary for sober minded conservatives to again address the issue. What the Mountain Observer, and most Conservatives, contend is that in our age of suitcase nukes, and other nasty stuff, those thousands motivated against us infidels all, eager to die for Allah and the greater glory of Islam, will only see western appeasement as weakness to be exploited. Their hatred of the west is not new; hundreds of years old, and only in recent times exploitable through the use of western technology not unlike Zeros and aircraft carriers in the hands of Samurai warriors motivated by extreme Shintoism. Islam will only see western appeasement as weakness to be exploited, and Fortress American isolationism will only be seen as such. So it is that those who advance dialog proposing retreat in place of victory are not helpful in supporting the purpose of national security. More harsh characterizations could be applied. Because Mr. Buchanan does such a fine job at articulating such an absurd, irrational and incoherent reading of history, I have included it in the South Park Rendezvous catalog, for educational purposes only, not a real reading of history. JES

06/27/08 The Second Amendment survives the inspection of the Supreme Court, and the DC gun ban doesn't. Even at this late date, on rare occasion Liberal Justice Anthony Kennedy can stumble upon the right decision. Best that he did on this one, or there would have been genuine hell to pay in the heartland. "A well regulated [by the people, as determined by the people] militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people [the militia in the founding sense] to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." In the founding sense, the government, at any level, does not run the people; the people run the government. Sovereignty works from the bottom up; not the top down. We are supposed to be a free people. It is more than about hunting ducks and defending one's self in the street. In the final analysis it is about drawing the line against totalitarianism, which is to say modern Liberalism, unchecked. Period. JES

06/15/08 It's a whole lot harder to set a train back on the tracks than keeping it on the tracks in the first place. I say this to make the point that good parenting is critical with a child from the beginning and why it will be so difficult to right the American ship, so long tortured by the self-absorbed Secularism of the 20th century. Ducking the issue by way of willful ignorance, and subverting education by using the excuse of victimization is a game that will have an unkind end for the dishonest among us. JES

06/14/08 This is the strangest presidential election year cycle I have ever witnessed. The GOP could nominate Abraham Lincoln or Bozo the Clown, and it would be irrelevant. This is not a contest between Baraka Hussein Obama and John McCain. The real contest is between those who will vote for Baraka Hussein Obama, and those who will not, for a variety of reasons. John McCain is irrelevant. The deeper national discussion has to do with what America has really been all about, traditionally, and what it is to become. Will we continue to honor the tradition of American Exceptionalism or continue to sink into the pea-soup scud of International Statism? The American people themselves need to look at themselves in the mirror and address this fundamental question. Do we collectively follow Baraka Hussein Obama and the Wacko Left off the end of the dock, or rely upon ourselves to address the immediate objective reality of the threats of IslamicFascism and the looming threat of American national bankruptcy? Do we indulge our culture in collapse, or stand up for a heritage worth retrieving? McCain himself, and the national GOP, have chosen to make themselves part of the problem; however Baraka Hussein Obama and the Wacko Left will seal our national fate. Perhaps it will take an actual IslamicFascist nuclear attack upon us the get our attention. Meanwhile, we cruise on, rudderless. JES

Serious Considerations:

06/07/08 Hillary "suspends" her run for the White House, a pregnant term under Federal election law, leaving open the term "resumes". She states her intention to back and support Obama without specifically praising anything he has said. She has pre-empted any possible charge by her party peers of divisiveness within the party, and positioned herself for all possibilities, including a run in 2012, irrespective of who wins this year, including the outside chance of herself. Frankly, to this observer, this sounded like the first pitch for office of the 2012 election year. Very excellently crafted and delivered with more than a dollop of feminist victimization to urge on her base. Hillary has not gone away. JES

06/06/08 64th Anniversary of D-Day. I remember. JES

.

06/05/08 Why does Hillary hang tough? Consider the following facts:

1. Until the Democrat delegates actually vote in Denver, there is no actual nominee.

2. Obama's delegate advantage hangs on the "super" delegates, and in spite of what any of them may say before the convention, none of them are legally constrained from changing their minds.

3. Obama is a "loose cannon", and every political pro knows it. Many "super" delegates, no doubt, tremble in fear of the consequences of being labeled as "racists" if they back off Obama absent what they might consider to be a "nuclear" failure or revelation on his part or about him. However, something of the sort could happen, and Hillary understandably, so far, has chosen to keep herself available.

4. Hillary is a fighter, and no doubt looking forward. In a worse case scenario she might consider any one of several possible "deals", including some form of inclusion in an Obama administration; not to bake cookies, but to raise much mischief in her own behalf looking forward. And where exactly are all those missing FBI files anyway? You see, there are many possibilities. Stay tuned. JES

06/04/08 On Donkeys, Elephants and Mules. Most folks these days do not understand that one can ride a horse off the side of a cliff, but that it is not possible to do so with a donkey, as donkeys are too intelligent to be so snookered. So it is difficult to reconcile this fact with the ongoing mismanagement of the affairs of the National Democrat Party by Howard Dean, a certifiable horse's ass, most recently regarding the disenfranchisement of millions of Michigan & Florida voters. Clearly the Democrat Power Elite, inclusive of the Mainstream Media, have thrown in with Baraka Hussein Obama, an off-the-cliff Lefty, in what could be a replay of the Joe Lieberman fiasco in Connecticut in 2006.

Sane people can only guess at the logic of this, but it would seem to make a trace of sense in a politically correct parallel universe populated by those consumed with guilt over past years of slavery. Perhaps some need to be reminded that many thousands of years ago, the tradition of slavery was considered a reasonable response as a consequence of conflict in defense of hearth and home. What better way to defend one's own hunting ground but to subdue invaders and turn them into property and assets of a sort, an entirely rational response to existentialist threats at the time. Somewhere along the line, a few hundred years ago, this old and venerable practice managed to take on a racial hue, encouraged no doubt, by the willingness to certain African chiefs, with the cooperation of certain western Libertarians (a term not in vogue at the time, but applicable), to barter some of those among them in exchange for certain goods and favors. In the western world the growing influence of Christianity influenced the moral re-direction of thinking on the subject of slavery. In the United States, the issue was finally put to rest on the Appomattox, VA, courthouse steps on April 9th, 1865. However, the practice of slavery continues today around the world, most notably in its Islamic parts, under the guidance of the mullahs.

So how is this relevant in the political race for Presidency of the United States in 2008? The Democrat Party, defenders of slavery until April 9th, 1865, is in the process of nominating as their candidate for President a totally incompetent Baraka Hussein Obama, whose only qualification is that he is black. The ideology of affirmative action and political correctness has now reached the highest level. Assuasion of guilt, regardless of the consequences for the nation, and regardless of the consequences for the eventual elevation of actually qualified black Americans (an increasing number), now is the priority for the self-absorbed among us, most of whom have never personally owned a slave. When a people stop thinking, and allow themselves to become enraptured by demigods, much mischief surly will ensue.

Then there is the problem of the Elephant of the Stupid Party. John McCain, and the Stupid Party, buys into the hoax of man-made global warming. McCain also buys into the Mexican premise of recondista with his pandering to La Raza. So much for national security and defense of the borders. While McCain surely understands the military, his ability to think through the policies necessary to guide and commit the same, come into question. We are living in a dangerous world where our armed forces will need to be deployed and used, but are any of current crop of candidates really qualified to do it? The proposal to close Guantanamo is not encouraging, on several levels. The Stupid Party drifts Left, as it has been doing for decades, Reagan excepted, filling the vacuum opened up by the disintegration of Democrats. Perhaps it is time to really start over on the Right. An American Nationalist Conservative Party, a Party of Mules, is called for, guided by the principles of our founding, and the United States Constitution, as written. JES

.

05/29/05 Regarding Scott McClellan, sometime White House Press Secretary, and his new book bashing his old boss. Whatever he has to say is tainted by the timing of the books release, which only reveals motives both monetary and self serving, not academically constructive or to be trusted. Were his efforts serious academically, and not politically motivated, whatever he had to say would have been more usefully released after the elections this fall. However, it is quite clear that was not his intention. Conservatives have never been comfortable with him, and indeed, his replacement by Tony Snow was a signal that the President himself had grown weary of limp wristed performances. Once again, the president has paid a steep price for his seemingly congenital disposition to appoint old cronies rather than professional competents. Far too late for another Conservative rescue mission pace Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, or policy correction on amnesty. As for Scott McClellan, one is reminded of the fate of turncoats through history, purchased for the moment by those who will only find him briefly useful. JES

05/19/05 The California Supreme Court trashes the ancient institution of marriage as between a man and a woman. This is serious folks, and a signal, as loud as it gets, that our days as a civilization are numbered. California voters will get the chance, this fall, to amend their Constitution to reverse this matter, but then, what do Constitutions matter anymore to Courts anyway? As an American, a Conservative, and a Catholic, I am appalled. JES

05/19/08 President George W. Bush goes to Israel, and before the Knesset, makes an excellent speech, including introspection on the tragic consequences of engaging in acts of appeasement toward those who are committed to your own destruction. It was really an excellent statement. It is a mystery of this Administration that the President fails to read his own speeches, for on this very same junket he was attempting to patch together an agreement between Fatah (Arafat's old organization), supposedly representing "moderate" Palestinians (still committed to the destruction of Israel) and Israel itself, while ignoring Hamas. Personal legacy building, very Carteresque, and not in our national interest. Best leave such matters to the Israelis to manage. Benjamin Netanyahu, where are you? This pattern of saying one thing and then doing the opposite has been a pattern throughout this Presidency. It is time for him to go. JES

.

05/19/08 Last week, in a speech in Portland, Oregon, Senator John McCain officially sold out his intellectual credentials on the matters of climate change, global warming and intellectual integrity both scientific and economic. He flunks Logic 101, and any qualification to be President of the United States equally (A term endeared by the Left) with Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Rodham Rodham. So much for Honor in the absence of intellectual and moral direction. In such a vacuum, honor necessarily collapses into infantile fantasies of ego and self promotion, a fundamental failure of our age. JES

.

05/08/08 The American presidential selection system, in 2008, stumbles forward, and Rush Limbaugh has shown all of them, all of them, to be complete fools. Good job, Rush; keep it up. The only thing of which we can be certain is that the American people will get exactly what they deserve; a complete fool. JES

05/07/08 In his quest for a settlement in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians the President is embarrassing both the United States and himself, and arguably harming our own national security. His Carteresque frolic to achieve a peace settlement simply isn't going to happen. The whole effort is so bizarre that an outside analyist can only guess at a more serious plan. Perhaps a scheme is involved to draw Iran into doing something truly stupid so as to provide a pretext for certain military action that should have occurred years ago anyway. But then, this is a wild idea too. The Mountain Observer, based on available public evidence, can only conclude that George W. Bush is ready for retirement. JES

05/05/08 The economy and election year politics. Notice that to the Left, aka Democrats, the economy is in the worst shape ever, and still headed for even further disaster. So it is seen through the lens of dependency thinking, and through the eyes of those who believe that the GOVERNMENT runs everything, or ought to. However, if one stops to reflect on the question of the health of our economy, it is evident that the only part of the economy that is having some difficulty are those portions actually under the heel of government, or directly run by the government. The truly private sector free market remains strong and is doing quite well. The so-called "credit crises" and "mortgage crunch" are healthy free market corrections of government policy errors dictated by politicians and regulators filled with self-importance and Liberal fascist economic tendencies. The Mountain Observer has been forecasting the likelihood of some of these government fiascos for years now, and is delighted with the prospect of long overdue market driven corrections. As water seeks its own level, markets, free or contorted by Statism, will eventually prevail over politicians. JES
